Finding the Best Home Improvement Loans

When the time comes to do work around the house, finding good deals on home improvement loans can be vitally important. Home improvement loans can be used to help you improve any part of your house or other real estate, providing you with the money to get the materials that you need and to hire the professionals that can get the job done.

Interest rates tend to be lower, since the improvements can actually raise the value of the real estate, and they can even include some of the external costs associated with building such as building permits and property taxes. Best of all, you don't need to supply any additional collateral... the improvements and the real estate serve as their own guarantee.

Equity is a key factor

When applying for home improvement loans, the equity of your house or real estate comes into play in a major way. Equity, if you aren't sure, is the amount of money that you have invested in the home or property... in other words, it's the portion of the house that you actually "own", and that isn't tied up in a mortgage or other loan.

If you have a mortgage for £100,000 on a home and have already paid £50,000 of it, then you have 50% equity in that home... or £50,000. This means that if you apply for a loan on that house, the equity that you have will be a major factor in determining how much you can borrow. The equity in the house serves as the collateral for the loan, and allows you to receive loans that you otherwise might not be eligible for.

Researching the project

Before applying for a home improvement loan, you need to gather some information. You're going to need to get the cost of supplies from at least 2 or 3 different outlets (such as building supply stores), as well as estimates from 2 or 3 contractors on how much the entire job will cost.

From there you need to start getting quotes from banks or finance companies, showing them the work that you plan on doing as well as the estimates for materials and labour. After receiving several loan quotes, look them over and see which one has the lowest interest rate with the best terms... this is the place you want to get your loan from. Once you've obtained your home improvement loan and started on your improvements, you need to start working on repaying what you've borrowed.

Not only does fast repayment prevent damage to your credit report, but it can also help to establish a good working relationship with a lender which can lead to lower rates and better terms down the road.

Painting Your Home's Exterior: An Easy Do-It-Yourself Home Improvement Project for the New Homeowner

Painting is a common choice for a homeowner's DIY project. It requires relatively few special tools and the skills are easy to learn. If you are new to the do-it-yourself world, painting your house is a great first step. Follow this guide to pick up some tips, tricks, and techniques to get your first project off on the right foot.

Selecting Exterior Paint

Choosing paint for exterior walls is easier in some ways than interior choices. Exterior paint is much more limited, so there are fewer options to overwhelm you (you can't get it in eggshell finish, for example). The color options are also more limited, and many people find it easy to choose an exterior paint color - most people stick with the existing color, in fact.

You should always make sure to choose quality over cost when choosing paint. A high-quality paint will cost more than the lower-quality brands, but it will also last much longer, and look much better. Quality paints are also formulated to be easier to apply, making your job that much easier. A cheap paint will chip, flake, crack, peel, and fade, requiring you to repeat the painting job more often, and costing you more money in the long run.

Estimating how much paint to buy can be slightly difficult. Different surfaces will need different amounts of paint, so simple math with the square footage won't always get you the right answer. Smooth surfaces will generally conform to that estimate, but surfaces such as stucco or overlapped siding will require 10 to 50 percent more paint. Ask at your paint store for help with the estimation, or try one of the many "paint calculators" available on the internet.

While you're purchasing your paint, don't forget the exterior primer! Primer, as its name suggests, prepares the surface for the new paint, ensuring good adhesion. Don't be tempted to skip this step to save time or money, because without primer, even the best paint can begin to peel quickly.

Select Your Tools

Power sprayers are often the first choice for professional painters, and may be a good option for you as well. These can often be rented for use over a week or a weekend. A power sprayer will apply the equivalent of two coats of paint at one time, and is great for covering large areas quickly.

Whether you choose a paint sprayer or not, you'll still need brushes. The sprayer cannot get into tight spaces and corners, and is not suitable for painting trim. Even the highest quality brushes are relatively inexpensive, so choose a good one. Well-made handles and bristles will lead to a smoother coat of paint and easier application.

Don't forget the other equipment! You'll need a sturdy ladder, of course. Depending on your specific case, you may need buckets, trays, mixing sticks, dropcloths, paint remover, or specialty tools such as an edger or sander.

Techniques and Tips

Choose the right time for painting. Autumn is a great season to paint. Paint has to have time to cure, and rain is its worst enemy. Intense humidity can get underneath the paint and cause irreparable bubbling. In a very humid area such as Houston, the driest time of year tends to be fall or winter, so check the weather reports and bring out your paint when the weather gets cooler.

Before you begin to prime and paint, you need to prepare the surface. Rent or borrow a power washer (or get a big sponge), and thoroughly clean your walls. Once clean, use an electric sander to smooth the surface, if your wall is made of wood. While you are cleaning and sanding, check the siding for signs of rot, mold, mildew, or other damage.

If you have multiple cans of same-color paint, combine them in a big bucket to ensure a uniform color. Even a very slight color difference can become obvious when it's applied to large areas.

Always start at the top! This will prevent streaks and drips down an already-painted surface. While painting, use broad, even strokes to get smooth coverage. Apply two coats of paint over one coat of primer to ensure solid coverage.

If you've never painted before, take some time to visit the paint department of your home improvement store, or a specific paint store like Sherwin Williams. The staff there should be more than capable of helping you figure out how much paint you need and which equipment you need, as well as answering all your questions.

Or contact your local construction company for assistance.

Why it is Better to Do Home Improvement Projects in the Slowing Economy

The great influx of people from all over the country and the rest of the world wanting to take a shot at becoming a part of the Big Apple - New York City, have long since caused a problem in the housing market. Today, this issue is faced by NYC homeowners together with the general condition of the economy of the United States; with the growing unemployment and retrenchments, instability in the Wall Street, and the decline in consumer buying. But even so, this time may be just the perfect opportunity to take advantage of and make a reality out f your dream home through home improvement projects.

In the slowing economy, it pays to be able to maximize whatever amount that you allot into your home improvement project. The assurance of success in home improvement does not lie in spending more. Even with less, you can avail of the best value for your money's worth by spending it wisely.

The key to the success of any home improvement project to boost return on investment is product selection and quality. To achieve the highest quality, it is crucial that whoever works on the project has the right skills and experience. So if you are not a contractor yourself better let a qualified professional take over and not only bring about success of the project but also make the whole experience a great one for you.

As the old adage goes, we should be able to see the light in every situation. In the case of a slowing economy, why is it better to do your home improvement projects now?

1. Now is high time to be getting the best offers and services from a certified New York contractor.

The slow economy has been affecting every business and trade and this includes the contracting industry. To keep their services more attractive, contractors are now offering home improvement services at a much lower price with several promotional benefits.

Thinking that DIY would save them more; many homeowners tend to avoid hiring contractors. But eventually they are faced with more problems and cost. This flawed idea keeps many contractors idle for a time and more than available to answer to your needs. By hiring a qualified contractor now, you would be doing both your home improvement project and yourself a favor. Without a long list of client to attend to, the contractor would be able to focus more on the job at hand going through every stage in the most efficient and timely manner with more attention to details.

2. Buying high quality materials for an affordable price is possible.

As was mentioned, many businesses, if not all, are greatly affected by the slowing economy. Among the most popular strategies to keep the customers coming and buying is through staging sale after sale. This could be the smartest time for homeowners to buy materials and supplies needed for the completion of their home improvement projects.

The slowing economy opens the door to the easier achievement of the key factors to a successful and valuable home improvement project and these are quality and product selection. And by taking advantage of the situation, you would be able to enhance the quality of living of your family as well as add value to your home. Successful home improvement projects would let you live in beauty and comfort even at tough times.

The Main Advantages Of Installing Brand New Patio Flooring

There a wide range of things to consider when making an outside living space. Your patio is a great spot to hang out throughout the summer months to enjoy the sun and get a bit of fresh air. One of the bigger choices you will need to think about is what kind of flooring you'll want for your outdoor patio area. The flooring may have a major impact on how your space looks and how individuals will feel in it. There are a number of deck flooring choices for someone to consider when you start shopping.

Lots of people like the look of hardwood floors and would also love to include that classic, expensive look into their outdoor space as well. You'll be able to choose either laminate or natural wood floor tiles that could be installed by yourself in a day or two, without the assistance of an expert. Deck tiles feature an interlocking design that doesn't demand the use of screws and nails to get them in place. You will find that the patio tile flooring is available in a variety of natural wood colors and also for the more daring individual, there are more fun, bold colors available. If you're looking for real wood as opposed to a composite or vinyl, you need to look for a hardwood like cedar or redwood that has a high oil content and can withstand extreme weather conditions.

Among the most popular patio flooring materials that people decide to use is composite decking. This type of flooring is made out of recycled plastic mixed with wood particles, and can be made to look almost identical to real hardwood. The major difference between the two is a substantial price difference. You'll find composite decking that'll fit into even the most modest of budgets. Vinyl is another floor product that some people decide to use because it's resilient and requires little upkeep and maintenance. Both composite and vinyl floors come in an array of options that'll look fabulous in your outdoor patio space.

When you shop on a tight budget for your flooring for the outdoor space, make sure you get a decking system you can install easily by yourself. This means you'll save money since you will not need to get a contractor to do the work for you. You can even decide on a rubber option that will be very durable and extremely safe, which may be a fantastic choice for people with children. Now a days, a lot of individuals are choosing ceramic or stone tiles, because of the luxurious and expensive look that it offers to your yard. Though they are simple to install for someone with experience, you might want to consult a contractor when installing tile outdoors if you don't have the knowledge.

Some types of patio flooring, like rubber, do a good job at insulating the floor from cold. If you are the kind of person that chooses to walk around outside with no shoes on, installing a rubber decking may be perfect for you. New flooring in the outdoor space will offer a new appearance to your backyard and you will be proud to entertain guests there. Your personal situation will be the ultimate element in deciding which floor is right for you. If you would like an expensive look, hardwood and natural stone may be for you. But for people with children that will require something a tad bit more durable, composite or vinyl flooring might be a more sensible choice.

Best Interior Design Tips For Your New Home

New homeowners have what is seemingly a daunting task to decorate their home from scratch. Truth be told, anything you start from scratch requires time and energy, but this is where you will find one hidden misconception. Investing your time and energy in order to turn a house into a place you can call home is not an overwhelming task. Just think about the final result, and you will easily find inspiration to decorate your home with style and according to your own preferences. In addition to this, we have selected some of the best interior design tips to help you decorate your home with ease, and make the right decisions when necessary.

The Measurements

The process of measuring your room and furniture you plan on placing in it are your first steps. This is the golden rule of interior design, and if you decide to skip this step, a number of problems may arise. For one, you risk the chance of buying furniture that does not fit into your room, or just looks awkward. You want to be able to walk around your new home without running into any obstacles, so be sure to take measuring tape prior to anything else, and start planning.

After you have measured the dimensions of furniture that will fit perfectly into your new home, you can actually start shopping. Another piece of advice that should not be ignored is related to the space between your furniture and the ceiling. Make sure that there is always at least 20 to 30 centimeters between these two. If your furniture is too close to the ceiling, the whole room will appear smaller visually.

Selecting Floor Coverings

After you have gotten an idea of which furniture you will place in your room, it is time to select floor coverings for your home. One of the best solutions in this regard is an area rug. Not only it will add style to your home, but also serve as a great focal point in your room. In case you have a spacious room to decorate, placing several area rugs will help you divide space into several areas, and make the entire room look well-decorated.

Mirrors and Lighting

Mirrors are essential when it comes to interior design projects. Aside from their practical purpose, mirrors can bring light to your home, serve as a focal point with the right frame, and make your room look bigger. Lighting is another important part of decorating your home, as without proper lighting even the most stylish pieces of furniture and accessories won’t be given a chance to shine. Therefore, make sure that there are enough light sources in your home in order to complete its look, as well as put an emphasis on different parts of your room you want to stand out from the rest of the space. You can use lamps with the most diverse lampshade patterns and colors, chandeliers, as well as any other source of light that will help you bring enough light into your home.

Finding The Right Style Flooring For Your Home

One of the most important parts of designing or redecorating a home is fitting the right flooring. The right decision can ensure your house transforms into a beautiful and cosy place in which to live. However, it can often be difficult to decide on the flooring that is right for your home.

Wood is currently the most popular home flooring material for various reasons. It enhances the decor of any room, is ecologically friendly and provides warmth and a timeless beauty that increases in value as the years move on. If you decide to fit wood flooring, consider each of the three types of wood flooring available to you.

Types of wood flooring:

1. Solid wood flooring.

These are wood planks or blocks (parquet) that are cut from logs and dried in a kiln to a moisture level of between 8% and 12%. They are then machine cut into various lengths, widths and grades and are later processed at the factory with wax or lacquer. Solid wood flooring is usually left unfinished for the installer to finish when fitting on site.

2. Engineered flooring.

This type of wood flooring is a hardwood veneer placed atop a cross plywood base. Engineered flooring comes in various thicknesses ranging from 10mm to 21mm. They have several benefits over solid wood, including ease of installation.

3. Laminate flooring.

This flooring is a photograph of a wood grain that is then laminated atop a wooden composite base. It is not real wood; however it does have many advantages over the other floor types. Laminate floor is durable, not sensitive to moisture and the easiest to install. The photo grain is also so good that you would not easily know it is not real wood.

Whichever flooring you choose, it is important to familiarise yourself with the methods used to fit them.

Fitting Methods:

Floating.

Floating is where the flooring is not fastened to the sub floor. This method is usually only ever used where a solid sub floor (such as concrete) is already in place. It is recommended to only use adhesive floor fitting foam to fit floating floors. It is never recommended to glue together floorboards and float them.

Mechanical fitting.

This is a popular method for fitting hardwood flooring. It involves using hand tools such as tape measure, carpenter’s square and hammer to nail or screw the floor onto existing floorboards, sub floor, joints or battens. There are different ways of completing the task with this method, including secret nailing where a nail gun is used to drive nails through the side of the tongue at angles of between 33 degrees and 45 degrees.

Gluing.

This method is suitable for fitting flooring on a solid sub floor. Always ensure that the sub floor is completely dry and free of dirt and solid particles. Install a continuous Damp Proof Membrane when using this method to ensure the floor remains dry.

Installation tips.

The key to successful installation is proper planning, preparation and execution. Ensure the relative humidity in the room where the floor is to be installed or even stored is between 50% and 65%. Too much humidity can damage the flooring and give poor results.

Also, check that the floor you get is kiln dried to the appropriate moisture content level: ideally 10%. The floor should also have been stored in temperature controlled conditions prior to your collection. This ensures the floor will require little if any acclimatisation before lying.

Finally, if you are installing the floor yourself, follow the manufacturer’s instructions fully to attain the desired results.

The 2012 home is within the town’s historic district.

Southern Living’s newest Idea House is unusual in that it is not a new construction, but a restoration of an 1830s farmhouse. This is the first time the magazine has renovated an historic home as its Idea House. The home is one of the oldest in Senoia, and has seen a number of additions and renovations over the years. Southern Living worked with architects from Historical Concepts, an Atlanta based firm, to rescue the house and redesign it for modern living. The architects were careful to stay true to the home’s original details. The structure was moved forward on the lot, gutted, and completely reconfigured inside. Old windows were replaced with new energy efficient windows. The house was clad in low maintenance exterior siding by James Hardie. A new dining room, keeping room, and a two story garage addition provide additional square footage. A wraparound front porch welcomes visitors and adds inviting outdoor space.

The interior spaces were designed by Tracery Interiors, with studios in Mountain Brook, Alabama and Rosemary Beach, Florida. The new floor plan of the farmhouse is a more open layout and lets in lots of natural light. Original materials were salvaged and reused when possible. The interiors are light, comfortable, and functional for today’s families. Fabrics and other fixtures are durable. Many of the decorating ideas can be used with any style of home. The designers have mixed old and new elements to maintain the home’s historic charm. A thoughtful landscape design adds curb appeal, and backyard living spaces provide private entertainment areas for a modern family to enjoy.

The 2012 Southern Living Idea House is open to tour through December 23, 2012. It is located at 57 Morgan Street in Senoia. Hours are Wednesday-Saturday from 11am-5pm and Sundays from 1-5pm. The house is closed on Monday and Tuesday. Tickets are $12 and a portion of the proceeds will benefit charitable partner Camp Southern Ground, a camp for special needs children. Beginning in October, the Idea House will be decorated for Christmas. It will be included on Senoia’s Candlelight Tour of Homes on December 9.

Tips And Guide To Facts About Advantages Of Using Soft Furnishings To Decorate Your Home

When decorating your home or room, consider applying simple decor and colors to the main pieces such as the couch, chair, tables and wall paint. By keeping these major factors on the mainstream, you can play around with colors, textures and accessories to your heart's delight. Use your accent colors on soft furnishings such as your curtains, rugs, and throw pillows.

You will save on decorating costs by maintaining a neutral look to your main pieces and interiors. Use smaller and cheaper items like throw pillows, curtains and throw rugs to add personality to your home. You may replace or change these small accent pieces every few months if you want to make your room look different. This will be less expensive than repainting your walls of having your couch reupholstered.

Getting your couch reupholstered or your home repainted will come out to be too expensive just to achieve having a new look. You can spruce up your interior design by replacing throw pillow covers, curtains and other small decor pieces. Retain a neutral tone to larger parts of the room and just change smaller pieces that do not cost as much as repainting walls and upholstery work.

You should spice up a plain beige sofa with colourful throw pillows and a blanket. Use the same color on your window dressing to complement your other accent pieces. This will make your whole room blend magnificently. When using this concept to decorate a room, stick to 2 or 3 colors only. Applying more than 3 shades to your theme may create a disorganized and mismatched look.

It is going to be less difficult to replace small cheap items as compared to repainting entire walls or having your living room set reupholstered. If you want to be more creative, get more pillow covers, area rugs, curtains and throw blankets in various colors, patterns and designs. It is that easy to change the entire look of your living room without spending too much for a total renovation.

This can instantly change the way your room looks and even brighten up your mood. Even your guests will notice a pleasant change each time they visit your house. The room will appear like it had just received a make-over when in fact, you had just replaced the rug, curtain or covers of some pillows. It is a great way to create a dramatic effect the cheap way.

You will have the benefit of a completely renovated look without the expense of one. It is practical and so easy to accomplish that you can change your room's appearance as seasons change. You can use current popular colors or use suitable shades to go with the time of the year, whether it is fall, winter or summer. Textures of fabrics can also be change accordingly.

Applying the use of soft furnishings will achieve what a total redecorating project can. The only difference is you can keep changing the appearance of your home as often as you want. Spending on smaller decor pieces is more reasonable than performing a total renovation. Think about this option the next time you are thinking of giving your home a make-over.

Learn How To Accessorise Your Home With Style

Homes are everyone’s castles, no matter how large or small they may be. They reflect the resident’s personality, their individual tastes and their sense of style. The accessories have normally been chosen because they match the décor of the home, or because they hold a special place in the hearts of the residents. A sense of style is always much personalised and people will generally try to stylize their homes according to their own perception of what is considered stylish. Yet, there are a few guidelines which can be followed while purchasing and placing accessories in a home.

Choose a Theme

If the home has furniture that is reflective of days gone by, then the accessories should also have a touch of an earlier era or have a vintage feel to it - accessorise in line with your main furniture items. Other basic style rules for inspiration cane be; in a room where the furniture has straight and simple lines, choose modern lamps. In a room where the furniture is carved or has a heavier look and feel, choose Turkish and Indian carpets.

If you're able, carry a different theme in each room and make sure that none of the accessories clash with the theme or vary too much from other rooms. With the large variety of accessories available in the market, not only is this easy to do, but you can also find a way to create some continuity through the rooms.

Choose the Correct Colours

One of the biggest mistakes that people make is when they choose colours that are not coordinated and which tend to clash with each other. It is important that one chooses colour schemes carefully, and makes sure that it is not a hotchpotch of colours, but a harmonious medley of shades in the room. Bold furniture upholstery goes well with muted walls, a brightly coloured lamp will immediately liven up a quiet simple room. Use accessories to balance the colour schemes in a room, since colour should be distributed equally all around the room, without focusing on any one area.

Choose What You Like

Sometimes what is in fashion may not reflect personal tastes and choices. Always choose accessories that are personally pleasing, since they have to be a part of your own home. If there is a particular piece of art which is much loved, then it should be placed first and everything else should take the lead from its colours and theme. An heirloom carpet can become the focal point of a room, and all other colours and accessories can be derived from it.

Every Accessory should Serve a Purpose

Often accessories are purchased because they look good in a store, but at home they do not coordinate well with the rest of the items in the room. Each accessory should be there only if it has a specific purpose. It could have a sentimental or nostalgic value, it could be a part of a coordinated theme, or it could even be there to add colour to the room. Do not over accessorise, if an accessory does not fit, then it is better that it is removed from the room.

Correct Placing

A symmetrical arrangement of furniture is generally done for a formal room, and an asymmetrical one is done for informal lounges and bedrooms. Placing the furniture and accessories correctly is very important while attempting to achieve a stylish neatly decked room. Place the largest pieces first, and then coordinate the other accessories around them. Mirrors should either reflect light or beautiful art pieces. Lamps should give light and also adorn table tops and dressers. Paintings or photographs can be grouped together to achieve a focal point in the room without spending too much money.

Trust your Instincts

Trust your own sense of style to prepare a room where you would be happy to spend time in. Follow the guidelines given above, but also follow what your heart says. Every room should be a reflection of your taste and your personal choices, and if these differ from the latest fashions, it really does not matter at all. Fashions are constantly changing, but style and good taste is perennial. Accessories are chosen to last for a longer time period, and you are the one who is going to be living with them the longest. Spend some time making a plan, and then follow it through using your personal preferences and tastes as the benchmark.

No matter the size, age or location of your home, at one point or another you're going to run into an issue that needs to be addressed. • Kitchen Cabinet Refacing

Kitchen remodeling is one of the most popular home improvement projects across the nation. A skilled local handyman contractor will be able to complete all of your small repair, replacement and installation projects in a fraction of the time it would take your average do-it-yourselfer. They will also be quite familiar with all of your home's inner workings, saving them time on projects that would normally take longer on a new home. This means on top of any repeat business discount you get, you will also save on the labor time charge.

  • Use Composite Flooring

Has the time come to replace your home's flooring? Whether it's a small section or your entire home, flooring projects can become expensive if you don't consider all of your options. This means you'll be able to see exactly what goes with every room, giving you the peace of mind you deserve on your flooring project.

  • Have Your Gutters Cleaned Regularly

Sure your gutters are just little aluminum troughs attached to the top of your home, but they actually play a very important roll in protecting the rest of your home from the harmful effects of Mother Nature. Your gutter system safely routes water from your roof away from your home's vulnerable interior systems and foundation. When gutters fail you're sure to see roofing damage, wood rot and basement flooding. All of which aren't fun or cheap. The thing is many gutter problems are simply clogs. Black Homeowners Guide to Avoiding the Latest Rip-offs and Scams

African American continue to experience the largest percentage of victims when it comes to scams, fraud and rip-offs. The scams cover everything from home repair, home mortgage, home improvement, auto repair and a host of other consumer issues. As the economy continues to tighten many predict this trend will grow as more companies and individuals grow more desperate to maintain company profits.

Most service and customer minded companies and individuals (including me) won't mind you checking them out. But the companies, contractors and agents who have spotty records, no license or have a shady pass will get nervous having someone check their background.

A recent government study also found African Americans not only the most victimized but also the least likely to research or check out a companies record before hiring them. Many companies and individuals take advantage of this little known fact and target African Americans. These shady companies and individuals tempt their victims with low prices, easy credit , or exaggerated promises to get their business. To avoid background checks they stress acting now or risk losing the low price, easy credit or other bonus or free offer promise.

One of the main reasons most people don't take the time to check out a company or individuals background come down to two reasons, based on research. Those two reasons is knowledge and convenience. Most people have only a vague idea of who to contact. Those knowing who to contact found it time consuming to write or call the right consumer protection agency.

With today's computer technology, the days of waiting on hold for your entire lunch break or worse is over. Many companies who make it their business to protect consumers continue to work feverishly to make it easy for consumers to check out companies, individuals and to lodge complaints.

Here's two organizations to contact to quickly check a business before you give them your money. Simply Google the organization to get their web address.

1. The Better Business Bureau

The BBB works as an arbitrator between consumer and companies

The BBB doesn't hold legal authority over companies (I'll discuss those later) it keeps complaint records on companies and charities, and issues fraud alerts.

The BBB also handles complaints on internet companies as well.

2. Your State Department of Consumer Affairs

State Department of Consumer Affairs covers consumer related businesses in your state. They offer the most popular scams currently in your state as well as scam protection tips. They offer quick and convenient online complaint forms and more.

One of the keys to protecting yourself and your wallet from scam artist or non-caring company is to get in the habit of quickly checking out companies or individuals you do business with. Remember the quality companies or individuals don't mind this. At the very least Google the company or person. You'll find the more you do it the easier it will be, like breathing.

In fact, you'll feel uncomfortable not checking out new companies you do business with. That's a good thing, because you're risk of victimization drops drastically.

5 Ways To Upgrade Your Home Garage

1) Automatic Garage Door Closer

If you have an automatic garage door opener, then why not an automatic garage door closer to go with it? I've had mine for several years now, and it continues to work flawlessly. The peace of mind alone is worth every single penny I spent. It's no secret that a garage door left open overnight, or while you're away during the day, is an open invitation to thieves of all sorts. With an automatic closer, you'll rest assured knowing your garage is secure. They're very easy to install with an existing opener, and typically, they can be programmed to close anywhere from two minutes to an hour after the door was opened. Additionally, they have a separate override button in case you want your garage door open for an extended period of time. Adding an automatic closer is one of the best things you can do for your garage.

2) Parking Guide

It's not uncommon to find an assortment of parking scratches and bruises in residential garages. One of the most popular remedies is the old tennis ball on a string hanging from the ceiling trick. This is a time tested remedy that works, but there are also modern solutions as well. Enter laser and proximity parking guides. Laser guides typically attach to the ceiling on or near the garage door opener. When the door is opened, the laser is activated and lights up a beam. All you have to do is line up the beam to a particular spot on your dashboard when your vehicle is already parked. Then, each time you pull in, let the preset beam show you where to stop. You can get just a single laser or a dual-laser depending on the needs of your garage. Proximity sensors, unlike lasers, mount on the wall you approach when you park in your garage. With these, you simply preset the distance between your bumper and the sensor. Then, as you approach, the sensor will tell you when to stop. Some models even act like a stoplight, with a yellow caution lamp, followed by a red stop lamp.

3) Floor Covering

Garage floor coverings are not only practical, but they really make a difference in the overall appearance of your garage. When talking about coverings, there are many different types including garage floor paint, epoxy, tiles, and mats. Paint is certainly the least expensive method, but also the highest maintenance method. Paint will protect and make your garage look much better, but you will have to add a new coat probably once a year. Epoxy is similar to paint, but it's thicker, and much more durable. It'll give your garage floor that showroom look you find in many dealerships. Epoxy will cost you more than paint, and you'll also have to do more preparation work, but the result will be worth the extra cost and effort. You can also opt for professional installation as most retailers offer the service. Garage floor tiles and mats are also options to consider. Tiles are typically 16 by 16 inches, and you can get them in a variety of colors. They interlock with each other to hold everything together, and they'll make your floor look absolutely incredible. Mats come in many different shapes and sizes to fit your needs. They're basically designed to contain automotive fluids, and all the muck your vehicle drags in with it.

4) Pegboard

Pegboard is nothing new to home garages. However, there are plenty of modern innovative shelves, hooks, bins, and containers that fit into pegboard. You can find these items at any home improvement center. You can use them for lawn and garden tools, household hardware, winter clothing, hand tools, etc. Pegboard is the most versatile type of organizer you can use. Basic pegboard is a little flimsy, but you can make it stronger by adding more supports when you mount it. You can also paint it to fit the theme of your garage. There are also other types of pegboard such as plastic and metal, which are available in different colors. Of course, they're a little more expensive, but they're also stronger, so you can use them to hold heavier items. No matter which type of pegboard you use, it'll help you control clutter which is one of the most common problems in residential garages.

5) Light Switch

Another way to modernize your garage is to upgrade the light switch with one that's illuminated when the lights are off. This eliminates fumbling around looking for the switch while leaning over, and holding the entry door open for enough light to find the switch. Even better, it's inexpensive and easy to do yourself. With basic knowledge of electricity, all you have to do is turn off the breaker that feeds the switch and wire up the new switch the same way. There are no additional wires to worry about. The end result is a mild orange glow that's easy to find in the dark. Another option is to add motion sensors to your garage lights so they come on as soon as you open the door. You can even get motion bases that screw into standard sockets. Once installed, all you have to do is screw in the light bulb as usual. This is a clever way to have motion activated lighting without having to do any wiring.

Ways to Select Home Storage Organizers

When it comes to home storage organizers, everyone just needs assistance in choosing the best that will be suitable for your home needs. When it comes to organizing, everyone needs some kind of assistance. Even those who like to evenly space out their clothes, hangers, you still need some help to organize everything. In choosing home improvement organizers, you need to make it uniform looking. You will need to spend some time in doing a little research. A good place to start is through your local thrift store. With regards to expenditure, there are two directions to go, expensive or luxury organizer and discounted ones. Each of them contains advantages while others also contain disadvantages.

If you prefer for new and expensive or what you can call luxury organizer, you can be sure it will last a lifetime since most expensive home storage comes from the highest quality materials. But you also need to look for certain brands because there are some that just don't use enough amounts of materials which they need to use for a certain product. If you prefer for discounted home improvement organizers, you can easily make your organizing purposes although there are times, you can't be so sure with the effectiveness of the product. Its longevity is not always guaranteed because it comes with cheaper value which means the materials used by manufacturers are also cheap.

Buying something you can't live without doesn't always need to be expensive. Although you want assurance, you can look for so many things that can provide you with enough reason to choose them if you will only compare and make a thorough research on what you should buy. There are lots of ways to find organizers that can help you with your concern. You will be able to find magazines and online guide that will help you find things you need without spending thousands of dollars in it.

There are also review sites which you can find various designs of storage materials meant for home use. Through it, you will be able to find adequate quality drawers and closets you are looking for. You can go personally at the store to check for availability. There are times when a problem will arise such as drawers not opening, not closing properly, stock up sliding door and things like that. There are couple of times when you need to check on some parts to make sure your money is worth spending in these types of things.

Although there are stores that consist of service centres, you don't need to always engage with them since you can buy something that comes with high quality materials. Although they were able to provide you with help you need you still need to look for some known brands that usually offer home storage organizers at a reasonable amount since they can serve you for a longer time. There are also kits which you can buy and then assemble it yourself. It may be time consuming but it will provide you with a lasting service.

How To Plan A Room Makeover Correctly

The rooms people live in are often a reflection of their personality. It is important to carefully plan the makeover of a room in advance to achieve a look that tells a story. People spend most of their private time in a home so it's vital the rooms within it are welcoming and relaxing. There are a number of points to consider before starting a new project that all require a little forethought and planning.

Document it
An ideas board is often used by some of the top interior designers in the UK today. A cork noticeboard is ideal for the job as it can be used to pin ideas up and move them around freely. People should start the process by visiting furnishing stores and looking for ideas on the internet. Samples of fabric, wall coverings, curtains, flooring examples and anything else that may define a room should be attached to the board. It is always a good idea to ask family and friends for their input on the issue. This process may involve a few weeks of adding and removing ideas; however, it should come to a natural end once the designer is happy with the final selections. Wall coverings, furniture, curtains and accessories must be included to ensure the room is coordinated when the work is finished.

A blank canvas
The first job is usually to strip the room bare and clean it thoroughly. Window frames, doors, walls and floors should all be scrubbed clean. The best scenario to start a project with is a blank canvass with no clutter. Many professioanl interior designers start a room with a neutral colour scheme. This is a great way of creating the illusion of more space in smaller rooms; it also makes colour coordination much easier. Swathes of colour can then be added that don't clash with each other or completely take over the room. It is important to remember that the ideas board should be referred to but never used as the basis for a final design; ideas should evolve as the job progresses.

A splash of colour
The most effective use of colour is of often the most simple. Many people make the mistake of adding too many colours, fabrics and patterns. This can make the room look cluttered and cramped which is exactly what most designers want to avoid. Subtle colours should be a common feature throughout the room and the use of patterns should be done so sparingly. Decorating one wall with an attractive design can make a major focal point in the room without overdoing it.

Use the light
The majority of homeowners will want to create a feeling of space and light in a room. The best way to do this is by allowing as much natural light in as possible. Leaving a window without curtains can maximise the sunlight that floods the space during the summer months. The careful placement of mirrors may also create the image of space and light in rooms that are irregular in shape or on the small side. Storage units with mirrors at the back can help to create a sense of depth and add to the overall sense of space. A little experimentation may be required if the final position of mirrors is to be effective.

The real opportuntiy to personalise a room is through the careful placement of accessories. They should complement the overall colour-scheme and be textured to add some gravitas to the living space. Designers can really express themselves with the inclusion of oddly-shaped ornaments, lamps and candlesticks; such items can add a little quirkiness and stamp a person's taste all over a room.

Home Improvement Projects That Really Pay Off

Many of us watch TV shows and see the miraculous transformation of homes and gardens by professionals and amateur do-it-yourselfers. Is it really that easy, we ask ourselves. Could I do it? Where do I begin? What home improvement projects will generate the biggest increase in the value of my home?

What Do You Want and What Can You Afford?

There are several good reasons for wanting to redecorate or remodel your home. If your residence no longer reflects your changing tastes and lifestyle but you don't want to leave a desirable neighborhood, maybe all you need to do is make one or two basic changes. Altering a color scheme, converting a bedroom into a home office, or upgrading the kitchen and bathroom are practical improvements that add esthetic appeal and financial value. If a move is in the future, you want home improvement projects that will give you the biggest bang for your buck when it's time to sell.

Whatever your motives for improving your home, make a wish list with three categories:

* Must have

* Would like to have

* Dreams can come true

When your list is complete, consider the amount of money you have available or are prepared to borrow. Unless you have unlimited funds, make a realistic estimate of what you can afford. Are you planning major renovations that will require the services of an architect or a contractor? Will you need an electrician, a plumber, a carpenter, a painter, or all four? How much work can you do yourself? All these factors must be taken into account as you pare down your list into affordable home improvement projects.

How Do You Begin?

Every project starts with a plan. Itemize everything you want and think you can afford, and include a design of rooms to be remodeled. If you are going to require professional help, now is the time to talk to contractors, plumbers, and other tradesmen, and to ask for estimates. Comparison-shopping is a must. If you are an accomplished do-it-yourselfer, price materials and tools needed. If you can't afford to do everything on your list, reassess your prime needs and make a new plan.

What Projects Are Key?

The best projects for improving the value of your home are, happily, the most affordable and the easiest to do yourself, even if you are a super klutz. Ask any real estate agent for tips on how to prepare a home for resale and you will be told that the house and yard should be cleaned and all clutter removed. Creating suitable home storage facilities and cleaning and painting the interior and exterior of your house, therefore, are the jobs that top the list of desirable improvements. The premium projects that usually require professional help are kitchen remodeling first and bathroom remodeling second. These particular upgrades will provide the best return for your money, and the real estate industry has statistics to prove it.

Clean Everything in Sight

Cleaning your home and yard is a great improvement project, and if you are remodeling, it will be the final step after the dust has settled. You will need something heavy-duty like tri-sodium phosphate or its equivalent to wash most surfaces inside and outside the house. There are also special cleaners for glass, tile, porcelain, stainless steel, and wood, and for getting rid of unpleasant molds and mildew. Visit your friendly hardware store and read labels. There are cleaners for almost every material and for solving almost every cleaning problem. Make sure rooms are well ventilated whenever you are cleaning, carefully follow directions, and wear gloves and a mask.

Removing clutter is another worthwhile project and requires adequate home storage with a combination of cabinets, shelves and bins, and sufficient strength of mind to discard all junk, no matter how much you love it. You can buy easy-to-assemble shelving and cabinets in a great variety of sizes and materials at affordable prices. Small, decorative containers can be used to organize and conceal the ongoing accumulations of such items as incoming mail. In the yard, removing clutter means getting rid of dead trees, dead branches, broken slabs and stones in patios and walkways, and tidying up the garden and lawn. When faced with clutter, ruthlessly throw it out, recycle it, hold a garage sale, donate it to the charity of your choice - get rid of it.

Interior painting and exterior painting should be next on your list of preferred home improvement projects. Fresh paint helps make your home look clean, bright, and spacious. When selecting colors for the exterior, don't forget to do something about that bland front door. Have fun! Fresh, harmonious colors add beauty and personality to your home both inside and out.

Put Kitchen and Bathroom Remodeling High on the List

Although remodeling a kitchen seems like a daunting task, a complete overhaul pays great dividends if and when you sell your home. Purchasing new cabinets and appliances are worthy goals, but you can also make minor changes that will create impact. If you can't replace the kitchen cabinets, replace the cabinet doors at least. If that is also beyond your means, add molding to the cabinet doors, paint them, and replace the hardware. It's not that difficult or expensive to replace an outdated sink, and if you can't afford a new stove, fridge and dishwasher, don't hang on to those gold or avocado monstrosities - buy attractive reconditioned replacements.

Bathroom remodeling is the next most important improvement and the biggest dividends come from installing a new sink, bathtub, toilet, and shower stall, as well as attractive tiles and custom cabinets. Again, if you can't manage a complete makeover, replace the tired old taps, faucets and showerhead; add shelves; and paint and redecorate the cabinets.

Other Projects to Consider

After you have decided on and planned for the most important home improvement projects, new window covering and upgraded flooring should receive your attention. You can choose from a large array of window dressings and styles, or simply buy fabric, turn hems with iron-on tape, and dramatically drape the material over attractive curtain rods. Shutters are another possibility and lend themselves to many different decorating styles.

Your choice of flooring is limited only by your taste and budget. Rip up the old carpet and replace it with contemporary hardwood flooring or laminate flooring. If you already have hardwood, simply sanding and re-staining it or giving it a clear finish may give your rooms the lift they need. Other flooring replacements that can transform a room include tile, vinyl, linoleum, or textured rubber.

Finally, save a little energy and money to improve the appearance of your yard. Maybe all you have to do to improve the garden is trim, mow, weed, and then plant a few flowers. Adding or upgrading an existing patio, deck, or walkway can also be very worthwhile. Consider adding a plastic storage shed to help organize all your outdoor stuff which will help remove the clutter from your yard.

Choosing the best modeling and redecorating projects will not only increase the long-term value of your home, they will also provide satisfaction and pleasure for you, the smart homeowner.

Choosing Cabinet Colors For Your Home Improvement Project

If you are looking for a home improvement project you might consider redoing the cabinetry in your kitchen. It is not an expensive thing to do and you actually can do some of it yourself. Sometimes people go overboard on the cabinetry, and it becomes so dominant that it takes away from marble counters, beautiful stainless steel appliances, and faucets.

Of course, when you first redo your cabinet you are so excited with them that you want them to stand out showing what a great job you've done, in order remind you that it was worth spending the money. Still, when I recommend home-improvements to folks, especially around the kitchen, I remind them that choosing the Cabinet colors is one of the most important things you can do when re-designing a kitchen, or remodeling the kitchen area.

If you choose cabinet colors that are too dark, you may not enjoy them long-term, but they may look very beautiful in the beginning, and you'll think you've done the right thing. Some folks like to have white cabinets, but if they are too bright and they reflect too much light in the kitchen they stand out too much.

Too dark or too light are the biggest mistakes that homeowners often make. And in doing so, they can actually lower the value of a home, as people that walk into the kitchen don't really like it and therefore they decide not to buy the house. Remember both men and women decide which house to buy based on the things that they feel are important to them.

A woman who likes to cook and prides herself on a clean kitchen may be turned off if you don't get the color right. Neutral colors are best and there is a reason why so many people choose these colors. Perhaps, you need to ask the decorative designer a couple of questions when picking out colors for your cabinets at the local hardware store. Please think of this.

Finding a Contractor For Your Home Improvement Projects and Repairs

If you can find an experienced contractor for your home improvement projects and household repairs, you will feel as if you have made a new friend for life. While there are many home improvement professionals offering services including plumbing, electrical and HVAC, it is hard to find a contractor you can trust and will perform quality work on your home. But with so many professional home improvement contractors available, how do you find the one who will be the best fit for your home repair projects?

The first source of information for most people is from word of mouth. Friends and family members will be more than willing to recommend a home improvement or repair professional that they have worked with in the past. While this is a good starting point, you should also inspect some of the work they did to ensure it was done properly.

While it may seem like a chore to inspect the workmanship of a contractor, you will definitely want to be certain they can perform the work that you need done with precision and care. If you're looking to remodel your kitchen, make sure you visit homes that have had their kitchen remodeled by the same contractor. Certainly, a contractor who has done great work on the exterior of a home but has never remodeled a kitchen before will not be the right fit for your project. Seeing physical examples of a professional contractor's work will make your final decision easier and you can rest assured knowing that they will do the work properly for your home improvement project.

You can also ask your local hardware store for some recommendations. They have working relationships with dependable contractors who they may suggest for your specific home improvement project. You can also contact reputable engineers and architects to see whom they've worked with in the past and which contractor did the best quality work.

Once you have narrowed down your choices, contact the contractor directly. Find out if they have the proper licenses and insurance. Discuss the project and explain in detail the work you would like done. Be sure to listen to what the contractor can offer you and any suggestions that they may have. When you've made your decision, ask for a contract to be drawn up so you can have all the necessary documentation in writing before any work is to be done.
As a homeowner, it is extremely beneficial to find a reputable home improvement and repair contractor you can trust for servicing your entire household. If you can find a contractor who will complete electrical and plumbing projects as well as general HVAC service, you will have found an invaluable asset for the maintenance of your home. You can build a long and trusted relationship with an electrical, pluming and HVAC contractor for all your home service needs.

Home Improvement Projects Could Require Garden Planning Permission

Owning a home brings lots of responsibilities for maintenance and upkeep. Most homeowners take great pride in their property and often want to improve. That's when the smartest homeowners check to see if their planned projects need garden planning permission.

The permission requires consulting with officials about what local ordinances and/or codes you must comply with in order to make improvements to your home or property. Some types of work are considered "permitted development" and don't need permission as long as they meet local building codes.

However, other property improvements are required to get it. The Parliament of the United Kingdom has assigned primary responsibility for planning to local authorities. Usually this duty is carried out by the planning department of a local council. Fortunately, it's possible to check on special permit needs from the comfort of your own home computer..

Why go to the trouble of checking out garden planning permission? You can find information on all kinds of uses and structures. Furthermore, it's possible to submit an application for a permit from any local authority in England or Wales through this one convenient site. The online service can be used for such requirements as planning permission, lawful development certificates, listed building consent and conservation area consent.

The website guides applicants through the process, and offers assistance at all stages. The application is saved online in case the homeowner needs to check on any details away from the computer.

The internet will offer information on the codes that regulate sheds, greenhouses and garages, along with swimming pools, ponds, sauna cabins, kennels, tennis courts and many other structures. There are also regulations governing the installation of a satellite dish, building a new dwelling on an existing property and provisions regarding the installation of fuel storage tanks on farms.

In additions, should you want a garden office to work from home or seek to build a granny flat for your aging parent, you'll need to check which one needs planning permission or a special permit. Sometimes they do, and other times they don't.

Don't make the costly and embarrassing mistake of failing to get proper garden planning permission for a home improvement or addition. It should be a property owner's first step in preparing to add a structure that will enhance the quality of life in his or her home.

Ideas For Home Remodeling

Most people think that once a house is bought he or she becomes a homeowner. But buying a house is just the first step to set up a home. It is a one time investment. However, doing the exteriors and interiors of the house will eventually make it a home. And again after some years, you will have to change all these. Every house, big or small, needs regular remodeling.

For example, if your kids grow up you may decide to construct a new room to accommodate them. If you are planning to bring home a new puppy, you may need to make a small kennel for the pup. Or if you have won a lot of trophies and collected certificates over the years, redo the furniture in the family room to safely showcase your proud achievements. All these require quite a decent chunk of money and one also needs to spend quite some time on it. There are various ways to carry out house remodeling.

Usually, small easy tasks of remodeling are done by the homeowners themselves. For example, if you want to change the door locks for enhanced security, you can buy a locksmith's tool kit from the store, get guides on how to change locks and do the whole thing yourself in couple of hours. Internet too provides useful Do-it-yourself guides on such small things. Small fixes done yourself not only saves time spent in catching hold of the local contractor or engineer but also saves good money. Moreover, you are also sure of the quality of goods used for the same. Identically, small carpentry or plumbing work like changing old taps can be done using readily available kits and guides. Exterior works like repainting the walls are also done by some homeowners themselves.

If you are planning to completely overhaul things at your home, then it would make sense to take services of a qualified home designer. These are professional companies who employ qualified people with vast experience in various aspects of home modeling like architecture, electrification, carpentry, plumbing, etc. They have teams of architects, designers, managers and workers too. You can either get designs of the house from them and outsource the actual work to a smaller firm or you can simply contract them all the work for a lump sum fee. The company men would come in their vans with special tools and within few days will change the look and feel of your house. You will also get a guarantee or warranty for most of their work. Most firms also offer regular survey of the house and also take care of small fixes for free of cost.

Corporatization of the home remodeling industry has thrown up various ways of remodeling the house. However, in spite of all this, genuine interest of the homeowner remains the biggest factor in success or failure of these projects. One needs to spend time and energy to sit with the designers or even the workmen themselves to ensure that he or she gets maximum value from the whole initiative. If one doesn't love his or her own house, even the best professional designer cannot make it a home sweet home.
